About WhenToVisits

Data-driven travel timing for smarter trips.

🎯

Our Mission

Most travel advice is written by tourism boards or sponsored bloggers β€” it tells you the destination is great, not when to go. WhenToVisits was built to answer one specific question honestly: what is the actual best month to visit any given destination? We combine real weather data, flight prices, hotel costs, and crowd levels to score every destination month-by-month on a 1–10 scale. The result is clear, data-backed timing advice with no commercial agenda. We don't make the decision for you β€” we give you the numbers to make it yourself.

Our Methodology

Every destination is scored 1–10 for each month, calculated from five weighted factors: weather comfort (40%) β€” temperature, rainfall, humidity, and sunshine hours; crowd density (20%) β€” tourist volume relative to annual average; flight and hotel prices (20%) β€” average fares and nightly rates versus annual baseline; local events (10%) β€” festivals, natural phenomena, seasonal highlights; and overall conditions (10%) β€” a catch-all for safety, visa accessibility, and seasonal disruptions. Scores use 10-year historical baselines from Open-Meteo and are recalculated weekly. This methodology is explained in full on our How We Calculate Scores page.

Data Sources

We aggregate data from multiple independent sources and refresh it weekly. Weather data comes from Open-Meteo's historical and forecast API β€” the most accurate publicly available climate dataset, used by researchers worldwide. Flight price data draws on Skyscanner and airline booking trend APIs, tracking average round-trip fares from the US across 100+ airlines. Hotel rates are sourced from Booking.com's public pricing data. Crowd levels are estimated using Google Trends search volume, hotel occupancy patterns, and seasonal booking data. Event calendars are curated annually by our team from official tourism databases, local government sources, and verified travel reporting. All data points are cross-referenced before publication.

Based on analysis of over 50,000 monthly data points across 10 destinations, updated weekly since 2024.

The Team

WhenToVisits was built by a team of travel enthusiasts and data nerds who got tired of making expensive timing mistakes. We're a small, fully remote team with personal experience across every destination we cover β€” including getting caught in the Kyoto crowds during Golden Week, overpaying for flights to Greece in August, and discovering Bali's shoulder season entirely by accident. That experience shaped the product: a tool we wished had existed before our own trips. We believe travel should be for everyone, not just those who happen to know the right insiders. Good data, presented honestly, levels that playing field.
